Call for Papers

Back to the City
- A Dialogue between Artists and Architects

We are calling for papers for a double-blind refereed book publication soon to be produced alongside the interdisciplinary exhibition of urban art interventions in the city of Newcastle. Sixteen collaborative teams of artists, architects, and landscape architects will produce site-specific installations testing contemporary crossovers between disciplines. The book will contain up to ten critical essays and is the third publication in the Creative Cities series.

Back to the City is the third in the Creative Cities series first held in Berlin (2002) and Brisbane (2004). Like these projects, a major publication will sit alongside the creative works. Back to the City - A Dialogue between Artists and Architects will contain ten critical essays alongside images of art in public space and the collaborative installations between artists and architects in Newcastle, Berlin and Brisbane.

The call for papers is now closed and the book structure finalised.

The publication will address the following key issues:

  • Public space, art and connectivity reclaiming public space in an environment of increasing commercialisation
  • Urban revitalization and art in the urban context
  • Theory of interdisciplinary arts practice and collaborative models

Each paper can have up to ten images.
