Carbon footprint: In the end the rain comes down

Stephen Cameron and Michael Zavros

Site: Harbour Square Honeysuckle Precinct

This installation acts as a marker of place and with Newcastle as the largest coal port in the world, this work points to the wider export of around 600 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions around the world every year.

This installation is a "footprint generating" device, laid flat on the ground in the form of a leather cutting pattern from a generic male shoe. The actual material of this device will consist of a resilient substrate impregnated with charcoal. Throughout the duration of "Back To The City", passers-by will be able to casually walk over the artwork, leaving impressions in its surface and also leaving behind actual carbon footprints on the adjacent ground surfaces as they move on from the site.
